In Pursuit of the Perfect Travel Headphones
Finding a good pair for headphones to use when traveling is vital. The right pair can make all of the difference in whether you are able to sleep through the wails of the crying infant a few rows back or the chatter of the couple sitting next to you.
For those with small ears however, like me and some of the other team members, the search is not that simple. To further complicate matters the first generation of noise cancelling headphones drove my ears so batty that my intense dislike of them turned me off of ever using active noise cancelling technology. Fast forward several years and many noisy plane rides later, I'm thinking it might be time to re-examine noise cancelling headphones.
My current travel headphones, and the ones pictured here, are the Bowers and Wilkins P5s. While the fit is not ideal thanks to my tiny ears, they are fairly comfortable and the sound quality is exceptional. They do not have active noise cancelling technology, but thanks to the materials and fit, do manage to block out quite a bit of noise.
Between the embossed details and supple leather, these headphones are quite polished and beautiful. The craftsmanship of the headphones is evident in how well after several years they continue to hold up. The leather has only gotten softer and the fit more sculpted to my ears. They are still uncomfortable however after continuous use for over an hour due to my small ears, but for those with average sized ears this should not be a problem. As I mentioned earlier they do not contain active noise cancelling technology, but they do dampen the noise fairly well.
After the admonishments of several friends and Tech Bird team members, I think it's time to give noise cancelling headphones another try.
